Revolving

What does your life revolve around? Colossians 1: 15-17 gives us a wonderful portrait of the only place that should be. He directs the attention of our souls and the affection of our hearts towards the one who is before all things, and above all things and upon whom all things depend (including you)- that One is Jesus.
First, He is perfect- The perfect representation of God. Hebrews 1:3 describes Him as the radiance of the glory and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. So today if you are sick of imitation gods, those idols that are shown for what they are when you scratch the surface of life bites down, come to Jesus, He is truly God.
Second, He is pre-eminent. He has authority as the firstborn, only begotten Son in His Father’s household. That means that everything else in all creation is under Him. So, the circumstances you find yourself in, the opposition that you are facing, the hard time that person is giving you, that lack that you feel so keenly, that anxiety that you feel so strongly- He has authority over it. Are you not sick of impotent gods? It is easy to get disillusioned with those idols that you trust instead of Jesus, which are never so powerful as they appear, the challenge is to replace them with Jesus and not some other counterfeit. Come to Him who rules everlastingly and faithfully.
Third, He is powerful- He made everything. Maybe you need reminded that creation can never be great than it’s creator and challenged to stop trying to make it so. If the things that you are trusting in seem inconsistent that’s because they probably are, you live in concern that the things that you rely on will break down at any moment. Come to Him who is always powerful and never fails.
Fourth, he is the purpose for all that exists. You were created to worship God in Christ and depend on Him. Your sin says that everything revolves around you, His salvation calls for everything to revolve around Jesus. So, if you are sick of incoherent gods which make you wonder what they do, why they exist and are the worth it come to Him who all creation is focused on, and all creation will bow before.
Finally, he is the provider for all He has made. He sustains all things, from the weakest to the most powerful, meaning that you can rely on Him completely and utterly. So if your life has revolved around impoverished gods that make promises but never deliver come to him who provides all that you need; He will sustain you, His grace is sufficient for you.
