BIG Prayers

On Sunday we spent some time thinking about Moses coming before God on behalf of people who had chosen to totally disregard and reject God in pursuit of something they had made themselves from materials that God had provided in His creation. It is a perfect picture of Romans 1 which describes our tendency to exchange the truth about God for a lie and worship and serve the creature rather than the Creator.

So Moses came before God and prayed for them (and for himself) in a way that was ridiculous in it's pursuit of, hope in and reliance upon God's grace. We took an aside to think about the kind of prayers we pray and how they are usually safe prayers. We encouraged the church here in Glasgow to think about praying BIG prayers:

Harvest PraysBold: We can approach God's throne with confidence to find mercy and grace to help us in our time of need (which is every moment of every day by the way). Yet much of our prayer is representative of shopping inthe pound store when we could be bringing our requests to the palace. Jesus is the real and true Moses. Moses was ill-equipped for the task and implicated in the sin of the people, yet Jesus intercedes for us perfectly in content and in His character. God is honoured when we ask much of Him. Do you think that God is offended when we humbly ask much of Him?

Impossible: The thing about prayer is God wants to answer them in such a way as shows that you and I aren't responsible or even capable of the outcome. Don't be left wondering did God do this or was it really us. Sometimes this is unavoidable because we want to pray for the small things. We should always have stuff that we are praying for that only God can do: a salvation, a healing, a situation beyond our comprehension or capability.

God glorifying: The conversation between God and Moses reaches the point in verse 10 where God makes a promise. 'Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.' Make it your goal today to pray something that asks God to show up big in your life or the life of someone or something close to you. Then tell the story of how God has shown up big for you so that He gets the glory and they get to hear about God.
