Sermon Notes- Our Great Gains
by Scott Hamilton on Wednesday, 25th March 2015
Over the last couple of weeks in our Room to Grow series we have had opportunity to pause and marvel at the amazing ways that God has invested in us by His grace. We wanted to highlight these things for you again. So below are extracts from the messages (you can listen to audio by clicking here)
First, we read in 1 Corinthians 3: 10-17 about how God has made his Spirit to dwell within us who have placed out trust in Jesus. We then underlined five things that the in-dwelling Holy Spirit is for us.
Present helper: John 14: 16-17 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Preventative measure: Romans 8: 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Promise assurer Ephesians 1: 13-14 when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, & believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Protective by nature: 2 Timothy 1: 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
Possession securer James 4: 4-5 whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”
Second, we read in 1 Corinthians 3: 18-23 that if you are in Christ 'all things are yours.' ALL things are yours. Now that's one of those sentences that you could easily miss if you are not reading carefully and it is for sure a verse that you don't want to skim over. So, again, we underlined five things that means (by no means exhaustive but gives us a picture). It means we have...
Eternal inheritance: Romans 8: 16-17 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God & fellow heirs with Christ.
Everyday assurance Romans 8: 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Empowering presence See all of the verse above relating to God's indwelling Spirit.
Ongoing assistance 2 Peter 1: 3-4 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness
Generous abundance Romans 8: 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?
Aren't those truths that ought to radically alter how you are living today?
